Chapter 9 — Feel the Burn

128 days. Just over 4 months. Our little adventure is now halfway gone, which incidentally is the state I have found myself most evenings, after one too many Summertime Martinis courtesy of my sister’s liquor cabinet. My sister Kate, brother-in-law Kevin, and dog Jaffa had the “pleasure” of our company when they kindly put us up for nearly three weeks at their lovely home at Saltburn-By-The-Sea. It was a special time for us, to see the place that has become their home in the UK, and getting to know Kevin’s daughter Amy and her family, including the highlight of her country ho-down themed 40th.

It was also a chance to get back in shape after putting on a little “holiday weight” during the travels, spending a lot of time powering through Joe Wicks workouts in the backyard, walking up and down to Saltburn along the coastal path, and joining in on the local Park Run, as a way to get the bikini bod ready for the French and Italian Rivieras.

We then met up again with the Chamberlain family, firstly with an overnight at Adrian’s brother’s place near Northampton, followed the next day by a walking tour of the village and area where Adrian grew up, before four nights at a Centre Parcs near London, a sort of surreal Truman Show-esque holiday park. There we spent most of our time at the pool complex, conquering our fears on water slides with names like Typhoon, Twister and Tropical Cyclone, which thrilled and terrified us in equal measure (the screams emitted from my normally self-contained wife were a particular highlight, and could be heard throughout the complex).

Our first UK leg was completed with a 3-night stay near Canterbury in Kent. It was just meant to be a stopover on our way to France, but turned out to be one of the most lovely campsites of our stay so far, set amongst rolling countryside and woodland, and complete with on-site cafe, wood-fired pizzas, fire pits, and a menagerie of farm animals to keep the kids entertained.
